CHAPTER 27
As Laura pottered around the kitchen, her mind was whirring. The meeting with Claudia Wright had gone as well as she could have hoped, but there was part of her that worried that by going to a newspaper she was opening a can of worms that might have terrible ramifications for her and her family.
Claudia wanted Laura to go on the record with all that she knew but she had explained that she needed time to think about the ramifications of that. However, she also knew that as a proud police officer, she couldnât rest knowing that Samâs death had been a result of corruption in the MMP. She owed it to Rosie and Jake to find out why their father had been taken from them, and to ensure the people responsible were held accountable for their actions.
âIs there anything you want on this food order?â Rosie asked as she wandered in looking at her phone.
Rosieâs relationship with food had always been tricky and uncomfortable â though thankfully it had never developed into any kind of serious eating disorder â but ever since her abduction, she had been increasingly particular in what she ate⦠to the point of obsessiveness. Laura knew that Rosieâs need to feel in control was a reaction to what had happened to her, and unless it became detrimental to her health, sheâd decided she wouldnât mention or challenge her daughterâs demands.
âLet me have a quick look,â Laura said, reaching out to take Rosieâs phone to look at the familyâs online shopping order, which Rosie had now taken control of.
Rosie smiled. âDonât you trust me?â
âNo,â Laura joked and then reached out a comforting hand and put it on her shoulder. âIâm kidding. I just need a few toiletries, thatâs all.â
âJake wanted some hair gel so I added that,â Rosie explained.
âHair gel?â Laura raised an eyebrow in amusement. âWhoâs he trying to impress?â
âI donât know,â Rosie replied with a shrug. âBut he does keep mentioning a girl called Hannah in his class.â
âDoes he now?â Laura said, feeling her heart warm that Jake might be getting his first crush but also the pang that came with it, knowing that he was growing up. She scanned the list and frowned. âWhatâs Matcha?â
âItâs powdered Japanese green tea,â Rosie explained.
âItâs what?â Laura laughed.
âGood for memory, brain function and energy. And loads of other things,â Rosie replied.
âWell I could definitely do with some of that then.â
Hearing the front door close, Laura knew that Gareth had arrived. She felt a twinge of anxiety. Having met with Claudia, it was more important than ever that she come clean to Gareth about everything to do with Samâs death, Butterfield and what she suspected about Pete. She still wasnât sure how he was going to react, but she would take it in her stride.
Laura handed the phone back to Rosie. âLooks great to me, darling.â
Rosie frowned. âWhat about your toiletries?â
âOh, next time,â Laura said as she went to talk to Gareth.
He looked exhausted.
âJesus, I need a beer,â he said.
